The University of Iowa is seeing a drop in applicants to the school's graduate programs.
Graduate College Dean John Keller says applications are down about 8 percent from last year.
He blames the numbers on a perception that it will be tough to secure loans. Others say people just don't want to take on any more debt during the economic downturn.
Law school applications also are down about 10 percent from last year, and university officials reported last month that undergraduate applications are off more than 3 percent.
Officials expect about 3,800 freshman in the fall, down 450 from last year.
