The route for the last piece of the MoPac East Trail south of the Platte River has been selected. Of the 20 Lower Platte Natural Resources District Board of Directors voting this month, six voted against the route as proposed including Dave Nielsen of Weeping Water and Marsha Babcock of Elmwood.

The Cassgram reports that Cass County landowners along the route have been vocal in their opposition through each stage of the process and that’s likely to continue, possibly with court filings.

The trail from Lincoln now ends at Wabash. The extension to the Lied Platte River Bridge is to run on the west side of 334th Street, connect with East Park Highway and then to the bridge near South Bend.

Eventually, the plan is to have the bike trail connect Lincoln and Omaha. The Papio-Missouri River NRD is working on completing the trail north of the Platte River.

Both NRDs have stated plans for construction on the final segments in 2010, but both NRDs noted that funding and other factors might delay completion.
