Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale was among those testifying against two bills which would allow Nebraskans to register to vote right up to the day of an election.

A hearing on two proposed bills was held on Wednesday before the legislature's Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee.

Under LB 382, introduced by Senator Kent Rogert of Tekamah, last minute voters could register at the election commissioner's office or county clerk's office.

LB 125 introduced by Senator Bill Avery of Lincoln, would allow voters to register at their polling place.

Secretary of State John Gale believes same-day registration is unnecessary, because Nebraska accommodates its residents in many ways when it comes to voter registration.

Those who testified in support of the bills argued that there should not be a deadline imposed on a citizen's right to vote.

Lancaster County Election Commissioner David Shively testified that logistically it would be difficult for election officials to register voters on Election Day.
