Nearly two dozen cats and dogs have been removed from an Omaha home near 33rd and Center. Tips from neighbors led the Nebraska Humane Society to the animals.

Officials say they found feces throughout the home in the otherwise well-groomed metro neighborhood.

The Humane Society's Mark Langan says, "It appears that this person doesn't realize how bad the conditions are and that's really common in hoarding situations. Conditions that are abhorrent to us are not that big a deal to them."

While the living conditions in the home are described as poor, officials say the dogs and cats are relatively healthy.

Langan says, "The animals actually appear to be in pretty good shape. They were being well fed even though the food was just thrown on the floor for them but all-in-all the animals appeared to be in fairly good health."

Jamie Jorgensen owns the home and her two children, ages seven and nine, also live there.

Omaha police and Child Protective Services are also involved in the investigation. Police say the children will be taken from the house.

As for the dogs and cats, Langan says, "It is a cruelty situation. She was taking care of the dogs in her own mind. She wasn't abusing the dogs physically but the living conditions are just so poor that dogs and cats should not be allowed to live in a house like this."

The animals will go to the Humane Society for evaluation.

Jamie Jorgensen was ticketed and not arrested because her children were not in any immediate danger. She was also ticketed for several housing code and animal control violations.
