The commercials continue to blare the message, you can get a quick boost by simply downing an energy shot. It promises five hours of energy with a bonus - vitamins. But is it a dangerous appeal to children?

Although there's no sugar in 5-hour Energy to cause a crash, there is still caffeine which is equivalent to a cup of coffee. And caffeine is a concern for parents.

"I have huge concerns. I think those are bad. I think they dehydrate kids, and I think they give them a false high with the caffeine," says parent John Huerter.

With a son on the Creighton Prep basketball team, Huerter makes sure his son knows the ups and downs of energy shots and drinks.

"We talked about that, and actually at Prep we have a program now against any kind of enhancement drugs and the energy drinks," says Huerter.

Nebraska Medical Center's Dr. Amy Lacroix adds, "I think it's something they should talk to their child about so they know that this is something that has an effect on your body."

But children don't always know how much is too much. 5-hour Energy specifies not to drink more than two a day, and none at all for a child under 12. Dr. Lacroix says too much caffeine for children, or anyone, has scary side effects.

"There are some side effects if you drink a lot of caffeine. It can make your heart race, it can make you feel shaky or edgy or very irritable," says Dr. Lacroix. "And when the caffeine wears out of your system, like any other stimulant, you sort of bottom out, you feel very tired."

Most of us might be more familiar with a Red Bull. 5-hour Energy has about the same amount of caffeine as a Red Bull, according to the labels. The biggest differences are the sizes, 5-hour Energy is only two ounces, and the fact that it has no sugar. 5-hour Energy also contains a lot of Vitamin B, with the Vitamin B-12 making up for 8,333% of our daily value.
