Millions In Cocaine Confiscated on I-80

The Douglas County sheriff's department has made the largest cocaine seizure in recent memory.

Sources tell Channel 6 news, on Monday deputies pulled over a motor home traveling on Interstate 80 near 96th Street. Deputies say the driver repeatedly drove on the shoulder prompting the stop.

The driver, 54-year-old Jose Melendez allowed a search of the motor home. Inside a hidden compartment deputies discovered 236 pounds of cocaine. It has a street value of 2.5 million dollars.

Melendez is from the San Diego area of California. Traveling with him was his 49-year-old wife Virginia Melendez and their 21-year-old daughter Virginia Melendez Ramirez.

They told deputies they were headed to Kansas City to visit family, but their stories didn't match. All three were arrested.

The motor home itself is valued at 250-thousand dollars. It has also been seized. The sheriff's department will file paper work to have it forfeited.

The case is now in the hands of federal agencies.
