A metro landlord has been ordered to jail for 30 days and the city hopes it’s a start toward getting his ramshackle property fixed.

Gerry Novak was given the 30 day sentence and put on notice to get the clean-up started at his apartment complex on 30th and Leavenworth.

The building has been considered a dangerous property for years. Windows are broken, conditions are unsanitary and there are structural problems.

Novak faces jail for failing to keep the complex livable and safe.

City Prosecutor Martin Conboy says, "When you talk about a place that has a history and a rather large problem, it's necessary to take whatever steps necessary to get it brought up to at least a situation of safety."

Beyond the problems with the apartment complex, Novak also faces a court appearance regarding a dilapidated house less than a block away.
