Fines for illegally parking in spots reserved for the handicapped could rise by hundreds of dollars in Nebraska.

On Wednesday, Senator Mike Friend of Omaha introduced a bill in the Legislature that would increase the fine for a first offense to 150 dollars from the current 100 dollars.

A second offense, if it occurred within the same year, would cost 300 dollars instead of the current 200 dollars.

A third offense, if it also happened within the same year, would jump to 500 dollars from the current 300 dollars.

Friend says he is not proposing the change because there has been jump in violations. Instead, the fines have not been changed for a couple of decades, and he thinks they need to be updated.
