One month since Iowa's first flu case of the season was confirmed, state health officials report a steady and slowly increasing number of reported cases.
So far this season, the influenza strains in Iowa are a good match to this year's influenza vaccine. "Because this year's vaccine appears to be effective against the flu strains circulating in Iowa, it's even more reason to get a flu shot," said Iowa Dept. of Public Health (IDPH) Influenza Surveillance coordinator Meghan Harris. "For those who are weary of shots, the Flumist inhaled vaccine is a great alternative."
School-age children have been the focus of vaccination campaigns this year, but young adults should take advantage of opportunities to be vaccinated as well. The flu vaccine prevents illness, reduces sick time away from work, and keeps friends and family healthy. Most health care providers will give the vaccine without a full doctor's visit, and in some cases, without an appointment. Be sure to call ahead to find out how your health care provider handles flu vaccination.
The flu is a respiratory illness caused by viruses. It spreads easily from person to person and can cause mild to severe illness. The flu comes on suddenly and symptoms may include fever, headache, tiredness, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, and body aches. Illness typically lasts two to seven days. People with influenza rarely have nausea, diarrhea or vomiting. Influenza may cause severe illness or complications in people such as the very young or very old, or those who have underlying health conditions.
To prevent influenza, Iowans are reminded to get a flu shot. In addition to vaccination, you should wash your hands frequently, stay home from work or school when you are ill with the flu, and try to stay away from people you know are ill.
