A common mistake costs an Omaha man more than he thought. Adam Lehner called what he thought was a local company for help.
Late one night, Lehner found himself locked out of his car with the engine running. He went to the phone book and dialed a number to what he thought was a local locksmith company.
“After you've been waiting for two-something hours with the car running in the cold, are you really going to call someone else that late at night and keep waiting some more or do you want to get it taken care of?"
Lehner made a phone call to company listed as Always Locksmith 24 Hour. "They didn't let you know how much you're going to pay. I asked when they called and they said, 'oh when the guy shows up, he'll let you know."
Lehner got a bill for $135, considerably more, he later discovered, than other companies charge. "I was pretty upset. I tried to call and talk to a customer service guy and was waiting on hold for 20 minutes."
Lehner checked his receipt. The address lists The Bronx, New York. The number on top says Dependable Locks Inc. "They're just like, who's calling and who's asking, they just hung up on me so I went to the address."
The address online for Always Locksmith 24 Hour is listed as 4416 Dodge, but instead of a locksmith, he found the Village Inn Restaurant.
"It was at that point that I realized that I really did get screwed out of my money and there was probably nothing I was going to be able to do about it."
Lehner was later told by someone at the company that they are a routing service.
The Better Business Bureau does not have anything under either company name locally, but under Dependable Locks Inc. in New York there are over 100 complaints in the past year.
The company is listed under numerous names, including Always Ready Locksmith and Dependable Locksmith. The report states "complaints received by the BBB indicate that Dependable Locksmith employs deceptive and misleading advertising and sales practices in several markets throughout the US. The company places several similar ads with false or non-existing local addresses."

Some might say that's the price for locking yourself out, but Lehner doesn't want to have anyone else left out in the cold again. "You don't want to see this happen to anybody else. You get the phone book, you think you’re calling a local business. It's not what you get."
Channel 6 News called the company and was told that they do not have any offices, that they have a national network of people they work with. When asked about the address listing, the individual said it must be a warehouse for them.
