The NCAA championship game ended Saturday night in sweeping fashion for Penn State. The Final Four proved to be a win for both the NCAA and the city of Omaha as well.
A record volleyball crowd of 17,430 was on hand at the Qwest Center Thursday watching as Nebraska was bumped out of contention. Saturday's crowd didn't set a record, however fans filled an impressive 14,299 seats.
The Old Mattress Factory is among the businesses which saw a spike thanks to volleyball fans. "It really drives our business any time Qwest Center's going," said manager Matt James. "Anything Creighton-wise is huge. This volleyball tournament's been gigantic for us."
A gigantic part of his crowd Saturday was wearing red, despite the Huskers having been eliminated. “The girls are the best team we've ever had," said Duane Trouba of Lincoln. "They were a team, they played their hearts out."
"They should have been here, but you know what, it goes on," added wife Paulette Trouba. "It's a game."
Tammie Noonan of Lincoln bought tickets for the championship game a few months ago, optimistic that the Huskers would be vying for the national title in the final game. "(But) we're rooting for Stanford tonight, all the way. Hopefully they'll do it this year."
"I am rooting for Penn State because if they win three in a row, that puts Nebraska number two in the country," said Duane.
Penn State coach Russ Rose recently said the Qwest Center venue gave Nebraska an unfair edge and he hopes it doesn't become a permanent stop for the NCAA.
Michaela Franklin, assistant coach for Northern Illinois, tells Channel 6 News Rose has a point. "I completely understand because I do think that the fans do give them momentum. I mean, how can it not?"
Still, Franklin applauds the locale for its support of the sport. "Nebraska fans, they love volleyball and they love to see good volleyball. So that makes the atmosphere really nice to play in. There are so many people there. It's packed, it's loud."
Kevin Noonan of Lincoln agreed. "I mean if the best fans in the world come here to support the teams that come here, they're not selling out 17,000 seats anyplace else."
Penn State's coach had one other complaint, Thursday’s ice storm. Coach Rose said he'd rather have been somewhere where he could enjoy time outside instead of scraping his windshield for 20 minutes.
Fortunately for him, next year's Final Four will be in Tampa.
