A warning to Cox customers not to fall for another Internet scam.
Internet scam artists are sending out phony e-mails hoping you’ll reply with personal information.
Linda Noland received one and that worried her because the it threatened to deactivate her e-mail service if she didn’t reply.
Noland reads the e-mail, “Warning if you don’t respond within seven days your account will be canceled. Noland says, "I think a lot of people might think that is real.”
The e-mail using Cox logos asks for a customer's e-mail password, e-mail user name and date of birth.
Cox Vice President Kristin Peck calls that "A big red flag". Peck says, “This is definitely a phony. We would never send an e-mail asking for any sort of personal information from customers.”
Cox filters 240 million spam messages a day. Only 10 percent get through. But peck says Internet con artists are trying to get more through filters all the time.
