Eighth graders at Lewis and Clark Middle School put on a fashion show with garments made of duct tape.

Wednesday morning students in the Inventions and Innovations class brought their creations to the runway in a fashion show dedicated to duct tape.

Teacher Derrick Nero says, "the class is set up to help kids learn about the engineering process behind the world around them”.

Each student was given a roll of duct tape with which to make an article of clothing. The intent of the class was to teach the design and prototyping process to the kids.

Shoes, hats, a cape and even glasses were on display. School officials judged the show a success.

Cool idea for a class assignment. I have been creating things out of duck tape for years. The duck tape iPod case is my latest creation. Check it out and download free instructions to make your own at http://www.totallytape.com/

im the third person that walked. it was harder than it looked. We had to design and show how we were going to make the hat and we had to right it down in ink and it was hard to makeit because the duct tape would stick to each other and we couldnt have anything but a roll of duct tape not even sissors or a mold

Unfortunately, the kid wearing the duct tape harness and a flag pole wasn't able to walk the catwalk for the fashion show.

In Europe, kids of this age are striving to learn science, math, and literature. Its a little embarrassing that kids of this age are doing this kind of activity in taxpayer-funded schools. I'm sure it was fun for them, but should have been an after school optional activity. Our country's children are falling behind many other countries in basic writing and math skills and we should concentrate on improvement.

I now have a better understanding why the US is falling behind other nations in the area of science and innovation. I would expect a lot more sophistication and planning for a lesson on engineering and design for 8th grade students. Nonetheless,I am glad the students had fun but I hope they are learning more in their other classes.
