Jim Buck, UNO's Vice Chancellor for Administration, announced his resignation Monday amid controversy surrounding recent shortfalls in the Maverick athletic department.

One UNO booster looks at today's news this way: One down, one to go.

Lee Sapp told Channel 6, "Jim Buck is a start, but I want Belck to leave too."

Sapp was referring to UNO Chancellor Nancy Belck, who has been criticized since the layoffs of five athletic department employees in June.

Budget problems led to cuts of about $440,000 in department spending.

The athletic department had to borrow from other university funds to cover its operating expenses, and Chancellor Belck apologized to UNO regents for not keeping them informed.

In July the athletic department began an internal audit after pressure from boosters like Sapp.

Still, Sapp says an outside audit is necessary, "Otherwise it will just be the same old cover-up."

Chancellor Belck was not available Monday night, but did say in a statement that she wished Buck the best, saying "I appreciate his commitment to the goals of higher education and our students."

Buck worked at UNO for about eight years. His resignation takes effect immediately.

Associate Vice Chancellor and Director of Finance Julie Totten will serve as the interim Vice Chancellor. A press release stated that the search for a permanent replacement will begin soon.
