Today is the first day of school for some students in the Omaha metro, but others hit the streets Monday looking ahead to next year.

A new Catholic school is scheduled to open in South Omaha next fall and busloads of volunteers are taking to the streets to spread the news.

Volunteer Catherine Stanek said, "I'm handing out fliers about the new Cristo Rey School and getting the word out because it'll be opening next fall."

Cristo Rey High Schools stress high educational standards, and also integrate corporate internships into their curriculum. They are meant to prepare students for the working world.

Now, businesses in North and South Omaha are being asked to help by allowing fliers to be posted in their shops.

"Many people don't have that much money to pay for the tuition that other Catholic schools ask for," said volunteer Cecilia Ruiz.

That's why the new school is paying 70 percent of students' tuition.

The school, located at 36th and Q Streets, has already raised $500,000 in pledges to help finance its first five years of operation. It hopes to attract about 125 students.
