Heartland families march toward a cure

Juvenile diabetes, also known as Type 1 Diabetes, affects millions of children across the country. Saturday, heartland families took part in a three-mile walk to raise money and awareness about the disease.

Keith Olberding's son Carter has Juvenile Diabetes. He says there are a lot of misconceptions about the disease.

"A lot of people think that well, you have insulin, so you're okay, but it's not a cure," Olberding said.

Taking steps toward that cure, the Olberdings joined thousands of other metro area families like the Phillips family.

Mother Linda Phillips remembers the "shock and fear of what was to come" when she found out her daughter Jacqueline was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes.

But the fear is no more. Jacqueline's father Steve says his crystal ball shows promising possibilities.

"We see a cure coming in the course of the next five to 10 years," Phillips said. "We're seeing a great deal of progress being made in health and development of children."

And progress is what Saturday's walk, sponsored by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, was all about.
