A 23-year-old Plattsmouth man has been arraigned in Cass County District Court on four felony counts for an alleged escape attempt in the Cass County Jail.
Michael Uptain entered not guilty pleas to all counts. The most serious charge of being a confined person committing an offense against another person is a Class II Felony, carrying a one to 50 year prison sentence. The other charges are 3rd degree assault of a peace officer (Class IIIA), strangulation (Class IV) and attempted escape (Class IV).
Uptain remains in jail. Bond was set at $750,000 (10% applicable).
Cass County Chief Deputy County Attorney Colin Palm told the Cassgram that Uptain is accused of grabbing a female jailer on October 31st and putting her in a headlock, grabbing some keys (not cell door keys) and threatening her. Uptain "took control of her" and "definitely impeded her ability to breathe," alleged Palm. Another jailer came upon the incident and helped subdue Uptain.
The case has been set for the February trial docket.
