Friday kicked off the holiday shopping season in stores and Monday marked the unofficial start to the online holiday shopping season. The Monday following Thanksgiving is known as “Cyber Monday."
Shopping from the convenience of your computer continues to grow despite a struggling economy.
The eCreamery is one Omaha business taking advantage of the boom in online sales. "Just anything you can imagine pretty much we put in ice cream," says eCreamery owner Abby Klusmire. "We do hickory smoke bacon bits in our ice cream."
The ice cream shop at 50th and Underwood sells their gourmet ice cream on their Web site and ships it all over the country.
Summer is their busy season in the store and online, but online sales spike on Cyber Monday and throughout the holiday season, helping to boost sales during an otherwise slow time of year.
"Our online business is a great way to supplement the winter time in Nebraska ice cream business,” says Klusmire. “So it's worked out well for us to be able to balance the two."
The ice cream from eCreamery comes wrapped in plenty of insulation and dry ice, but you probably don't want to leave it under the Christmas tree.
Nationwide last year, Cyber Monday saw sales in excess of $733 million. Analysts expect the busiest online spending day to be December 15th, as we rush to make sure gifts can be shipped in time for Christmas.
Beth Whited of Omaha says she plans to do 60 to 70 percent of her Christmas shopping online.
"You can find things easier. You don't have to go from store to store and keep looking. Especially if you know what you want, like something specific. Sometimes better selection and if I can get free shipping, then I really do it."
Marcus Elston of Omaha is looking for a good deal. "I'm hoping the things I'm looking for for my wife should be online and they should be a relatively good discounted price."
"It's the easy convenience. It comes to your door, you can get it already gift wrapped. It's just a matter of putting it under the tree, not having to worry about hiding it out so much if you would."
