Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo has two new additions just in time for the holidays. The lion cubs are on now on display, a donation from the Tautphaus Park Zoo in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Mfisha, meaning “fighter” in Swahili, is a year and a half old. Ahadi, which means “hope,” is just 11 months.
The young sisters have a lot of energy. Handlers help them expend it -- by making feeding time fun. While Channel 6 visited, the cubs were busy trying to get meat out of a sack and a pumpkin out of a box.
"You make them work for it a little bit and give them something to do,” said Zoo Director, Dr. Lee Simmons. “And you can see these guys are having a lot of fun."
The lionesses will help Henry Doorly's African lion breeding program which has been struggling. Dr. simmons expects they will produce new cubs for the zoo in a few years, once they've reached maturity at age four.
