The Archdiocese of Omaha has launched an anti-pornography task force to battle pornography's rising presence on the Internet and the influence it has on adults and children.

According to Mary Beth Hanus, victim assistance coordinator for the archdiocese and chairperson of the task force, children get exposed to graphic pornographic images over the Internet as early as eight years old.

"Internet pornography affects every aspect of a community," Hanus said. "It is clear that as a church we must battle and try and turn back the overwhelming negative impact of pornography on a community."

Hanus said that more than 40 million U.S. adults regularly visit pornographic web sites. The industry rings up billions of dollars in sales every year, with average daily receipts close to $26 million, according to the Family Safe Media web site.

The 17-member archdiocesan task force is comprised of clergy, archdiocesan personnel, and members of the Catholic community. Its primary objective is to increase public awareness of Internet pornography and its long-lasting effects on a community.

One of the task force's first priorities is to sponsor educational workshops. Clergy, school principals, directors of religious education and youth/young adult ministers are invited to attend workshops February 16-17 in Omaha, Norfolk and Fremont. Father J. Brian Bransfield, a nationally recognized expert on the harmful effects of pornography, will be the keynote speaker.

Has the Archdiocese solved the pornography problem within the church? I expect that Mary Beth Hanus also knows that children get exposed to pornographic experiences with naked men in the church as early as eight years old, if not earlier. Mind you, I don't blame the church completely. Pedophiles are drawn to jobs that give them access to children, such as schools, daycare centers, boy scouts and girl scouts, summer camps, churches, temples and mosques. The problem is, everyone tries cover up the situation and treat the problem as an employee gone bad, when many of the bad employees were pedophiles to begin with. They just hadn't been caught yet. So catch them and hang them out to dry! The more you coddle and protect them, the more you'll attract to your organization.

I believe the church has taken responsibility for their actions and have gotten rid of the pedophile priests that they know of. They are now requiring everyone who has any contact with children to take classes and full background checks are done on anyone who is hired. They are teaching classes in every grade about protecting yourself and letting others know if you feel violated. There will always be some bad apples in any organization, especially one as large as the Catholic Church. Porn affects everyone and to criticize them for wanting to curb porn seems unreal to me. Anyone or any organization that wants to fight porn has my vote. Porn is a terrible drain and sin on our society.

The catholic church is always quick to protect the masses from themselves and the evils of the world. How about starting at home and get rid of pedophile priests first? Stop covering up these atrocities, have the church take responsibility for their actions and then maybe try to save the world from itself.
