Former Republican Gov. Mike Johanns won his bid for retiring Republican Chuck Hagel's Senate seat in Nebraska, beating Democratic challenger Scott Kleeb on Tuesday.
With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Johanns led with 58 percent of the vote to Kleeb's 40 percent. Johanns, who also is a former U.S. agriculture secretary and Lincoln mayor, is arguably one of the best-known politicians in the state.
Hagel, who is finishing his second term, decided not to seek re-election.
The Green Party's Steve Larrick and Nebraska Party's Kelly Rosberg also ran for the Senate seat with each receiving one percent of the vote.
