Both candidates push for last-minute votes Monday night in the race for Nebraska Congressional District 2. It's a sequel of 2 years ago. Will the results be different this time?
Lee Terry wants to remain a Congressman. Jim Esch plans to stop it.
It didn't work two years ago. Lee Terry won nearly 17-thousand more votes...a difference of 9%.
Lee Terry: "I feel real good about us in this race tomorrow night."
Jim Esch: "I feel like we've done everything we can do. It's going to be a tight race."
Unlike 2006, Esch has a presidential candidate that gives him momentum. Barack Obama has opened three offices in Omaha. An Esch win could translate to an electoral vote for Obama.
Esch: "If the country was headed in a good direction, I don't think you'd see as much excitement either here or around the country. I think certainly Obama's presence here is a huge help at turning out the voters."
Lee Terry: "I'm trying to make this about me and what I've done for the district."
The 5-term incumbent understands how he can get caught in an anti-incumbent groundswell. It's also why he's made it known there are Obama-Terry supporters out there too.
Both sides have spent a lot of money. Both sides feature a heavy rotation of negative ads. Lee Terry says, "If you put up nice, soft running through the fields of daisies to counter that... Your numbers just drop like rocks. You have to punch back on those types of ads." Jim Esch says, "I knew if we got close it would get very negative. I don't think I've talked about anything different [this year]. But the election itself is certainly different."
There are 3,000 more Democrats than Republicans registered in Douglas County -- that could definitely help Jim Esch. Remember though, a part of Sarpy County is included in District Two. 2 years ago, Lee Terry won those precincts by 25%.
