Omaha police say they've locked up a Minnesota man and ended a crime spree. Twenty-four-year-old Jeremy Winkel is behind bars.

Investigators say they're not sure when Winkel, of Lyle, Minnesota, got to town but they believe his crime spree began at the UNO library. Guards found him late Sunday evening, July 2nd, inside the locked building. He was arrested after a short foot pursuit.

Court records indicate that Winkel pleaded guilty to trespassing and was sentenced to one day in jail. He was given credit for the few hours he was behind bars and set free.

Winkel next showed up at Rosenblatt Stadium watching fireworks on Monday night and authorities say he tried to steal a police motorcycle outside the stadium.

Omaha Police Sergeant Teresa Negron says, "It's not very often you hear of someone attempting to steal a police motorcycle."

Winkel then allegedly tried to knock another officer off a motorcycle and then jumped into the bed of a pickup truck trying to escape.

He was captured and spent a quiet Fourth of July in custody but police say that in the early morning hours of the Fifth, he tried to escape from his holding cell. He failed.

Jeremy Winkel faces charges from assault on officers to trying to steal a police motorcycle, to attempted escape. He is being held on $100,000 bond.
