Addressing Foster Care Drivers

A state agency wants tighter controls over people who drive foster kids.

State auditors are leaning on Nebraska Health and Human Services officials to perform more background checks of these drivers.

The Legislature’s Performance audit Committee suggests that NHHS give regular updates on policy changes. It also recommends other steps to increase oversight, including more checks of whether contractors comply with state rules.

The agency has agreed to take many of the steps.

In August, a woman was sentenced to a week in jail, and two years probation, after having a blood-alcohol level five times the legal limit while transporting an eight-year-old foster child in Sarpy County.
