Bellevue Police hope a surveillance photo will crack a major credit card scheme. Channel 6 News was first to report credit card numbers had been stolen from a Bellevue Lansky's in August.

Investigators believe 40 credit card accounts were compromised and used to make purchases in seven states. An item purchased at a Council Bluffs Wal-Mart has provided the best clue; a surveillance photo.

The victim who used the card at the Bellevue restaurant doesn't want his identity known. He tells Six on Your Side, "It is a mystery but it starts by identifying this individual."

Six on Your Side first reported how the victim discovered $20,000 in fraudulent charges on his card. Purchases had been made across the country from Las Vegas to Council Bluffs where the surveillance photo was taken.

Bellevue Police say the credit card numbers were stolen electronically, but they still aren't exactly sure how. They do know no one at Lansky's was responsible.

Restaurant owner John Hoffmann says new more secure software is being added to Lansky's computerized cash register. That will allow quicker credit card payment by customers. Since discovery of the fraud the restaurant has relied on a direct line to the bank which can take up to 45 seconds for a transaction. About the new software Hoffmann says,"They won't have to stand there waiting for this ticket to come back out so it will keep things moving and be convenient to the customer."

Bellevue police hope someone will provide the identity of the identity theft suspect.

Anyone with information please call Detective Roy Howell at 402-293-2776.

This is why small businesses need to be up-to-date with the latest PCI requirements. It is difficult for small businesses to understand all of the ways a smart attacker may use to break in to their credit card systems and steal our data.

My husband and I often use our check-debit card when dining out. Not anymore. If the restaurant will not take a check (and even THAT might not be safe anymore), we will pay in cash.

If it was wireless and unsecured, all you would need is a computer that picks up wireless signals and a program to decipher the signals. Duh.
