The city of Bellevue has named Mark Elbert as the new police chief. City Administrator Dan Berlowitz made the announcement on Monday afternoon. Elbert has been the interim chief since June 2012.

Elbert has been with the department since 1996 after spending two years as a police officer in Fremont.

"Chief Elbert has impressed me with his leadership and initiative while serving as interim police chief," said Berlowitz.

"For sure, I think it's a relief that if anything else the process would come to an end," said Chief Elbert in an interview with Channel 6 News. "So we don't have that looming out there and we can get down to business."

Elbert says one big move is his biggest task in the near future.

The Bellevue police department will move into their new headquarters -- a renovated office complex -- next spring.

Elbert took over the department last summer following the resignation of John Stacey Jr.
