A boating accident Saturday morning at Ginger Cove near Valley, Nebraska landed a couple in the hospital and a man in jail.

A couple in a fishing boat was floating in the lake when another boat rammed it in the side around 12:30 a.m.

Fifty-nine-year-old Robert Hawkins and a female passenger who were in the boat that wasn't moving were taken to Creighton University Medical Center in critical condition. Their injuries were not thought to be life threatening. Witnesses told authorities that the stopped boat had no running lights.

Thirty-one-year-old Thomas Hurtgen was arrested for driving under the influence. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department said he had a blood-alcohol content more than twice the legal limit.

"It's shocking that something like that has happened on the lake," said Amber Elliott, a Ginger Cove resident. "We would hope that everybody would be safe."

Richard Zehnacker is on the Ginger Cove board of directors and said it's concerned for those injured, adding they have rules saying the lake is a no-wake zone at night and all boats should be lit. They also have lake patrol on weekends enforcing the rules.

"We have an extensive set of rules which legislate against that but the big thing is you have rules you have laws, but you can't legislate against stupidity."

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department is still investigating and hasn't determined if speed was a factor. It did say investigators are looking into whether alcohol was a factor on both boats.
