Authorities continue to piece together evidence in a case against a New York man accused of sexually assaulting a Washington County teenager over the course of several months.
Investigators say that prior to the alleged incident with the 15-year-old girl, nobody in Washington County, aside from the victim, had ever heard of John Monetti.
Prosecutors say that the 37-year-old flew out of New York last week and arrived in Kansas City on Friday. They say he rented a van and drove to Blair. He was arrested on Monday night.
The county attorney says an observant neighbor in a gated community called authorities after seeing the van driving suspiciously on Monday afternoon.
Then a deputy's instincts kicked in and county attorney Shurie Graeve says, "His suspicions were simply because the vehicle was found in the area based on burglaries they've had in that area of our county. And so he initiated a traffic stop and he made contact. Once he made contact with the occupants of the vehicle, he then followed through."
The deputy separated Monetti and the girl and began questioning them.
The girl said Monetti was her uncle. The deputy called the girl's parents who were unaware she was gone, and unaware of anybody named John Monetti.
The deputy asked the girl if she said Monetti was her uncle because she was scared and she answered, "yes."
Investigators say Monetti met the girl online. He began monthly visits in February and they continued through this past weekend.
Monetti is a teacher and that troubles Sheriff Michael Robinson even more.
He says, "He's in charge of taking care of the kids and teaching the kids. To have somebody like this, you hear all the time -- we weren't surprised. It's just very disappointing."
The report says that when the deputy informed Monetti he was being detained, the suspect said he hadn't done anything wrong.
The child's mother told investigators that the girl is "low level" autistic and she said that Monetti should have been able to perceive that.
Authorities searched Monetti's hotel room in Blair and his home in St. James, New York. They're not saying what, if anything, they found.
The charges Monetti is facing include seven counts of First-Degree Sexual Assault.
