Two years and $9 million later, the much needed facelift of an Omaha elementary school was officially completed Sunday with a dedication ceremony.

Parents, teachers and students of Mount View Elementary near North 52nd and Fort streets officially showed off the brand new facility.

The 18,000-square foot school has first-class upgrades in everything from the classrooms with automatic lighting to lockers for students and a new playground. There's also a wing adjacent to the school specifically for the Boys and Girls Club.

Parents are thrilled with the results. "We would ride by and see how much progress they made and when we walked in there that day, they had a grand opening thing, it was amazing,” said Mildred Maclin.

The new school officially opened its doors to students last year, but Sunday’s dedication was held a year later after the final touches were put on the parking lot.

I went to the South Omaha Boys and Girls Club almost everyday as a kid, and I am a firm believer that this sort of activity kept me away from gangs and violence. There were always positive experiences I had there that I will remember forever. North Omaha does have a B&GC out there and I think that community leaders and even parents should promote its use and events. It shouldnt be nothing about forcing the kids to go there because I know when I was little I wanted to go there. I think if you teach them right from wrong at the 8-12yr old range then they have a better chance of being productive members of society, rather than weilding a gun and taking others lives.

A whole new school plus a Boys and Girls club for 9mil. A walking bridge for 22mil Sounds like the 22 mil could have covered that cost plus one more school. Govt. earmarks need to be changed our tax money should be spent on things that are needed not wasted on things that we just want. Private funding or local taxes should cover that stuff.
