A funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon for Lonnie Calvin Allen, Jr. at Capehart Chapel. Family and friends gathered to pay their respects and honor the life of a fallen soldier.
The 26-year-old Nebraska native was killed two weeks ago while serving in Iraq. His sacrifice was met with honor.
Dozens of wreaths and bouquets surrounded hundreds of mourners as they celebrated the life of their friend and loved one. Tears flowed as guests were invited to speak about Lonnie Calvin Allen, Jr. Friends, soldiers, and family members took their chance to stand and speak.
"He loved Batman, and like Batman he was going to get out and make the world a better place to live," said a parent who knew Calvin as a child. "Calvin helped make the world a better place and served his country proudly."
"Calvin may not be here, present with us, right now," said a former classmate. "But he is here in spirit, and God couldn't have picked himself a better soldier."
"I would like everyone to get up, stand, get on your feet," said a fellow soldier. "Give this young man a round of applause for giving his life to his country."
Sgt. Allen's mother, father, brother and widow sat quietly in the front row while people spoke of a man they loved.
Among those who attended the service, Bellevue Mayor Jerry Ryan and Congressman Lee Terry.
Grief took over Birgit Allen, Sgt. Allen's widow, as an honor guard stood silently outside, honoring Sgt. Allen with American flags and a lone bell.
Allen's family said he dreamed of returning to Nebraska and developing a career in law enforcement.
Sgt. Allen will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday.
