A 28-year-old man is in custody for having sex with a 10-year-old girl.

Sean Hanken faces charges of first-degree sexual assault on a child. Deputies discovered the pair in the back of a truck on a dead end street in a county subdivision still under construction.

“The deputy was able to approach the vehicle, peer through the window and observe what was going on,” says Douglas County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Marty Belick. “It was clearly sexual activity, the girl is clearly underage at 10 and we made the appropriate arrest."

Hanken knew his victim and most likely somehow gained her trust.

Project Harmony is a place where the girl could come for help. Counselors would place the child in a safe, trusting environment and give her the help she needs.

“Often times children feel guilty so they work with them around all of those feelings of guilt, the shame, the embarrassment, to help them recognize it’s not their fault,” said Project Harmony’s Dr. Debra Anderson.

Dr. Anderson said it takes time, but Project Harmony can help children who trusted someone who ended up hurting them. “The two most important things, having a parent that believes you and stays by your side and getting the child into therapy immediately. Those are the two most important things we can do for children.”

Project Harmony helps around 2,300 children a year, 60 percent of those are sexual assault victims.
