A celebration of the lives of two Council Bluffs teenagers killed in last June's big storm was held Saturday night in Omaha as local bands performed at a tribute/benefit concert.
Friends, family and strangers made sure the memories of Jake Hemmingsen and Skylar Shaw live on. They died during the June 27th storm when hurricane-like winds split a tree in Council Bluffs that fell on top of the car they were in. They were both 18 years old and had a passion for music.

"Jake and Skylar definitely deserve to be remembered, especially for their music and who they were as people," said friend Eric Paines of the band Aracadia.
"He was a goofy kid, off the wall, always able to make you smile," said Kyle Gann.
"He loved to sing,” said Samantha Young. “He was in choir at ALHS with us."
Nine bands played the Sokol Underground. Proceeds from the show and sales of T-shirts will go to two scholarship funds in Jake's and Skylar's names. Those who knew them can't think of a more fitting fundraiser.
Skylar played drums. And Jake? "He was a bassist as I am so I kind of feel a connection there," said Gann.

"He was heavily inspired by music," said Paines. Shared passions set the stage and shared connections filled the audience. "Both Skylar Shaw and Jake Hemingsen were friends with my older brother and his band is playing here tonight," said Young.
"I have a son in one of the bands and I work with Skylar Shaw's mom,” said Judi Thallas.
All drawn together by two boys who didn't plan to leave, but left a lasting legacy. "This is exactly what they'd want, everybody coming together and just completely rocking out," said Gann.
