Thousands took time out of their Sunday to step up and help a neighbor. Volunteers from 31 area churches participated in the Step Out and Serve project to pitch in and beautify the community.

Half painted for the past two years and without help, George Ward said he was never able to give his home at 34th and Charles that finishing touch. "I feel like I'm on Extreme Makeover. It feels wonderful to know there's still people in the world willing to help.”

Help arrived with paint brushes. Talia Osborn was one those who volunteered. "A lot of times people don't know that there's people out there who care and to come down to do a simple thing as painting a house, say hi or saying that we are here and we can help you out and we do care about you."

And not just at the Ward residence. There were projects going at dozens upon dozens of locations across the city being handled by 6,200 volunteers.

They weren't just painting homes. Scott Warren and his girlfriend were busy sweeping up around a neighborhood ministry. "If we can help clean up a little bit and then also be able to serve the kids and have some fun with them today, makes the whole Omaha community a little better."

At least one resident thinks it is. "I'll be thanking all these wonderful people here, that they came here to help," said Ward.

Step Out and Serve ultimately helped out 125 local nonprofits. In addition to painting, they did landscaping, cleaning, construction and cooking.

hey thanks to everyone that stepped out and helped out the community of omaha. I was one of the 6,000 that stepped out. My parents also helped out. We helped out at camp rivercrest just out side of Fremont. I go to Christ community church and i love that we have started this and we will continue to do it. Thanks again to everyone that helped out you are amazing in my eyes just as much as Gods eyes. I also hope everyone that helped will continue to help in the years to come. GOD BLESS

Jan - I'm sorry the busybodies of your homeowners association have nothing better to do than to harass you about painting your house. GOOD neighbors would find a way to help you out if they realized there was a problem. Unfortunately, that type of neighbor is hard to find these days. Don't know if the Office on Aging would have any ideas or not, but they may be able to help.

As just a visitor to town, I thought what a wonderful thing to do. I visited Westside Church and saw members dressed in Blue Tee-Shirts at service. When the speaker informed of the reason for the atire I was happy to be in a place that was expressing love in such a way. Thank all of you who help to make this world a better place to live. God Bless all.

If there is some reason George Ward could not finish painting his own home...please do tell. He looked quite capable on the news story! With so many elderly and handicapped people out there maybe time spent here should have been better placed...

I was a part of the step out and serve I worked in South Omaha at the Mosiac Community Center and helped clean up the street up and down 13th Street. It was great to see everyone working together to make the city better. When I got home a group was working right down the street from my home on an individuals home painting. The house looks wonderful and makes the whole street look better now. Thank you all who helped out! This is a great community we need to keep it that way! God Bless!
