The casting call has gone out in the metro. Is there a model waiting to be discovered for a reality show about "real girls?"

So far the producers have been to eight cities. It's a show, not about size-zero models, but in the creator's mind, real girls. The winner of the show receives $100,000 and a jumpstart to the modeling dream.

For two hours at a downtown Omaha hotel Monday, a producer for the new MTV reality show “Model Makers,” which starts filming next month, interviewed potential models.

"We often discover diamonds in the rough,” said Michael Flutie. “People really don't understand sometimes their own strength and beauty because beauty is not just physical."

The conversations cover a lot of ground for Flutie and his independent scouts. "In order to really be a true professional model you need to be at least 5-foot-9."

This show promises to be different. "We believe that there's enough scrutiny in the fashion industry and also women today don't have the right images of what is beautiful."

At least two Omaha women have a chance at moving on to the next round. "It's unbelievable,” said Conner Rensch. “I couldn't even walk a block and now I can run a mile." Rensch has already lost 50 pounds. "I've always been the girl with a pretty face, but now I want to be the one everyone looks at."

Taylor Barstow just finished her summer job as a camp counselor. The producers provided a black dress and a camera. The fashion runway may come calling before college does.

The open casting call continues Tuesday morning at the Hilton Omaha between 10 a.m. and noon. The producer is looking for women between the ages of 17-24, 5-feet-9 to 6-feet tall, 130 to 190 pounds.

The crew was in Des Moines Sunday where they found a candidate while hanging out at the Iowa State Fair.

Fifteen women will eventually be selected. The show starts taping next month and will air sometime next year on MTV for three months.

So let me get this straight....you have to fit in a certain category to be considered "real". Oh wait, its MTV....a network all about looks!

Maybe I'm just cynical, but I have a feeling that one of the things that these girls will have to do if they make the show is lose weight. They're looking for "real girls", but they want to make them models and are planning on transforming them. It would be nice if they found these real girls, and then left them as is, just teaching them confidence and how to carry themselves.

I agree - it's pretty sad that even the "real girls" have to be 5 feet 9 or taller. I had a friend in high school who was beautiful, smart, friendly, and incredibly talented. She designed and sewed most of her clothes, got excellent grades, was well-liked, and could sing like an angel (got a FULL scholarship to Julliard). But she couldn't be a model because she was only 5 feet 2. My own daughter is lovely (not just my own admittedly prejudiced opinion - she's been told many times she could be a model), intelligent, popular, and is a black belt martial artist - but she's only 5 feet 8. Guess she shouldn't bother applying, since she's not a "real girl".

Its nice that there are still some people out there that realize real women are not a size 1, but real women aren't, on an average, 5'9"-6'tall.
