A bill that makes it a crime to harm a human fetus has won final approval in the Unicameral.

Under the measure, intentionally causing serious injury to an unborn child will be a felony punishable by 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

It also makes it an assault if an unborn child is injured by someone committing another crime, such as robbery or arson.

Omaha Senator Ernie Chambers fought the bill, arguing that a human zygote does not have a body, yet the bill describes doing "bodily harm."

The measure was sponsored by Senator Mike Foley of Lincoln.
