Deal Reached With Omaha Fire Union

Omaha has reached a tentative agreement with the fire union for a new contract. The deal comes at a critical point. The contract dispute was scheduled to go before the Nebraska Court of Industrial Relations next Monday morning, August 4th.

Mayor Mike Fahey's office has not yet shared details on the new contract but Channel Six is told the deal eliminates the controversial practice of "spiking." Under the existing contract some retiring firefighters were able to leave the fire service with annual pensions of $80,000 and $90,000 a year, and those pensions are for life. By comparison, the Social Security Administration says the average worker in Nebraska and Iowa will receive $11,000 a year.

The new contract also addresses the sensitive issue of having firefighters pick up some of the cost of their health care insurance. Omaha firefighters, as well as police officers, pay nothing for their health insurance, a situation which is rare for workers in almost any other setting.

Amy, Most of us do have a second job to make ends meet. Many volunteer fireman do get some sort of pension after serving for a certain number of years. What do you base your guess on in regards to how much pride we have in our jobs, I think you might be wrong. We never said that our contract shouldn't be revised, we all agree that it did and were more than willing to give up a little bit but the city was asking for everything, what they fail to tell you is that we have given up many things so that we will have a good pension and also so that we have health insurance. I know you won't believe this but we're underpaid when compared to other similar departments and that's because we put the money into things other than salary (pension and health insurance to name a couple). It was a very small percentage of firemen that retired with the pensions that the media is constantly trying to shove down your throats. I love what I do and sincerely hope that you never need my service.

TO AMY, SHAME ON YOU FOR COMMENTING ON SOMETHING THAT YOU OBVIOUSLY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT! FURTHERMORE, I PERSONALLY KNOW SEVERAL OFD FIREMEN, EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM OUTSTANDING CITIZENS THAT ARE WILLING TO PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE AT ANY GIVEN TIME FOR YOU! REGARDLESS IF THEY ARE PAID OR VOLUNTEER.

Does everyone contribute 15% of their check to social security? Why are they comparing the two then?

You can bet the citizens will get the raw end of the deal. Thanks Mikey

The average Iowan or Nebraskan also doesn't put about 15% of their salary into a pension fund either. Don't get me wrong "Pension Spiking" needs to end. Nobody deserves to be paid more when retired than they did before they retired. But don't comare apples to oranges. They get nothing from social security when they retire.

Sorry guys, your jobs are important, but, it is very obviouse that contract should be revised. Your pants go on the same way as mine and I have to save for my own retirement and I still won't come close to what the earlier retiree's are getting from your union. That is just outrageous! What do volunter fireman get? My guess is nothing and they do the same jobs and my bet is they have more pride in what they do for free. I suggest getting a second job like most people these days if you want to retire that rich!

Don't firefighters pay 15.4% of their paychecks into their pensions? I don't see that information presented anywhere in this article.
