A man fixing up an Omaha home was attacked with a brick Wednesday afternoon, allegedly by a group of kids.

"All I know is it's just sick around here, it's just really sick, these kids here,” said Sam Montgomery. “I mean the guy's working on the house, he's trying to repair the house and they just outright just attack him."

An attack Montgomery can't believe he saw happen in broad daylight a few houses away from him at 42nd and Bedford at 1:45 p.m. "I saw four guys jump on the guy that was over there working on the house. He said they hit him in the head with a brick."

After calling police, Montgomery went to help the man he didn't know. "It looked pretty bad, he was bleeding all from his head and everything and I asked him what did they hit you with and he showed me it was a brick up there."

A brick that was possibly part of that home repair job. "Scary, just scary, I mean our hands are kind of tied, the parents hands are kind of tied and we don't know what to do, it's a scary thought," said Montgomery. "I worry about it, but what can you do?"

Police identified the beating and robbery victim as 42-year-old Fred Doran. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

Officers are questioning two people about the attack, but no word yet of any arrests. If you have any information about the assault, call police at 444-7867.

Stop blaming parents for everything kids do! Punish the JDs severely! The word will get out that we are taking back our community & will NOT tolerate their lawlessness! It'll get better or we will need to build more jails to hold them all.

The people who witnessed this but say they saw nothing should be charged with obstructing justice. I believe there is also a law about not stopping to help someone who is injured. Maybe they'll start ratting out these brats if they know they could go to jail for not doing so.

i have 2 points to make: First: This is why there should be schooling all year round witha couple of months off in between the schooling days. Kids get into more trouble when its summer time. Becasue there "parents" are not at home they are working all day and the kids are there alone. Second: Its not always about the parents raising there kids. Kids will be kids. I have 2 brothers and a sister. My brothers are the ones that got into truoble with the law, drugs, drinking...everything you can imagine. While the 2 girls, never been in trouble with the law, no drugs ever, no drinking ever. So maybe next time you blaim the parents look up your research. Im not saying all parents were like mine and yes there are parents that dont care but dont generalize the whole group of "parents." Its kids having kids..single parents...and poor choices thats it!

I would have been over there is 2 seconds. You could have helped a man who was getting beat, plus you could have put a beatin on two punks that need their butt kicked. Sick of hearing about people in North Omaha not doing crap to take back their neighborhood, but yet all they do is complain that nobody is helping North Omaha. Help yourselves first, have some pride people.

What parents? You meant PARENT! It takes a village to raise a child? I've done my part raising my kids and didn't expect anyone to, or to discipline them when I'm not around. There's no accountability in North Omaha. How do they ever expect to get any decent people or businesses to move in when something like a random attack happens so often.

If they arrest someone charge them with attempted murder. If you hit someone in the head with a brick you have to be expecting to do some serious damage to that person. Some lawyer will probably claim the ate leaded paint chips when they were little.

Tied? More like they encourage. Lets Rename North O "Nosnitchers".

HOW are the PARENTS' hand tied? Either raise your kids right or discipline them to within a nano-millimeter of the law! These kids need to be taken to the proverbial WOODSHED!

So, it's interesting...talking to Mr. Doran. While he was getting beaten, he was yelling for help. He looked across the street, and saw people at their homes, looking out at him while he was being beaten. Nobody came to help him until AFTER the cowards left. And....then those people didn't even cooperate with the police. When police asked these people if they saw anything, they said..."NO...i didn't see nothing". Interesting that the neighborhood is attempting to create a neighborhood watch. Good luck with that. Frankly, I think there should be a law created, that could punish those that are to cowardly to step up to help someone, or for that matter, to even call the police.

This is a good case of alot of people who saw what happened, but know wants to help. There were people watching these animals attack this man and nobody has the nerve to stand up and do something. However these same people will protest and march against the police when they do their job. Ireally believe the north Omaha community wants everybody to do everything for them and they dont want to lift a finger, to lazy. This is the problem with north Omaha. The people in north Omaha say they are tired of the violence, but they wont do anything to stop it. The community leaders are to busy patting themselves on the back for the things they dont do. What really have the community leaders done for this part of town???

What are parents to do? Really? How about RAISE YOUR KIDS WITH SOME VALUES? I live a few blocks away from where this occured.. Back when I hurt myself in an accident a couple of years ago, kids were offering to help me fix up my house and yard.. out of the kindness of their hearts, not for money! What is wrong with people anymore? SHAME!

these kids are a bunch of worthless punks and i hope they are caught and punished to the fullest extent of the law!!! and the parents too!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 23, 2008 at 08:05 PM
The parents need to teach their children not to do things like this. When they find out who it is, and they will talk, beat the tar out of them, then turn them in. Zero tollerance for random violence.

Posted by: A on Jul 23, 2008 at 06:44 PM
If they find those kids they better treat them like adults, when they end up in jail with an actual adult. Then they'll get a quick lesson in just how big of cowards they truly are.

Posted by: David on Jul 23, 2008 at 06:33 PM
I hope they find the persons responsible and file attempted murder charges on them. And charge them as adults.
