The University of Nebraska has found a way to conserve energy on its Lincoln campus and not just gas. UNL police officers will soon be patrolling on electric scooters.

Capt. Carl Oestmann says the department recently purchased four Segway scooters to save on fuel and to help make officers more accessible.

UNL officers will continue to patrol campus in cars and on bikes, but the scooters will reduce car use saving on fuel costs and reduce wear-and-tear on vehicles. And unlike cars, scooters can reach nearly every corner of campus.

Oestmann says the scooters could be useful in preserving officers' energy during longer, more demanding shifts.

Officers are finishing up scooter training and will begin using them within the next two weeks.

Segways are a great idea, because everyone knows electricity is free and doesn't cause pollution! All you do is plug something into a socket, and you have electricity! I don't understand why we don't all drive electric cars, because we'd never pay for fuel again. Someone told me about pollution from generating electricity, but I’ve found you only get smoke if you overload the circuit. So be careful!

It's got to get awfully hot on a segway with a helmet, two shirts, and a ballistic vest. This purchasing decision wasn't what the rank and file wanted, but a cheesy "look how green (and slow) we are" PR move on the part of the command. The rank and file prefers bicycles for off-street patrol.

To anonymous.....I agree with Jamie & Susan. These cops need to be in good physical conition for their jobs. Mountain bikes WOULD make more sense than these Segways. DUMB IDEA ! ! !

At $5000 each for a new Segway, that's 20 grand. Is that out of the taxpayers pockets? Wouldn't mountain bikes (around $1200 each) be a cheaper alternative and keep the campus police in tip top shape?? Also, the top speed of a Segway is 12.5 mph whereas a fit mountain biker can do twice that speed. If there where an incident on the other side of the campus, I'd like to know there would be a quick response.
