Omaha's summer in the national sports spotlight continues next weekend. Following the College World Series and the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials comes the 28th annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games.

For the first time in its 28-year history, the nation's biggest wheelchair event will be held in Omaha.

"It's been a blessing to me," says Mike Moore. "I can't wait ‘til it starts, which will be the 25th. I'm just ready to rock and roll now with my team."

A 13-year competitor in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, the former power lifter competed in the 1992 Para-Olympics in Barcelona. Now, Moore is the head coach for Team Nebraska.

"I'm very proud of this team. I really think we're going to win a lot of medals." This year, Nebraska has 22 veterans competing in all 17 categories.

"If you win that gold, you're the best in the nation,” says Moore. “You have got to understand that that's really what it means if you win that gold medal, you have bragging rights until next year, until someone comes after you.”

It's not hard to hear the competitor in the voice of this former Marine. "They are all into competing and all willing to kick somebody's butt to win."

For this teacher, there is potentially more than just pride on the line in these games. "If you're that good in a wheelchair, you got sponsors big time and that’s what I try to impose on my athletes."

There is a fundraiser for the games going on Sunday at Prestige World Class near 168th and Pacific. The fundraiser, The Sprint To The Finish, features live music, comedy, a fashion show and live and silent auctions.

Proceeds support the 28th National Veterans Wheelchair Games which start this Friday with events at the Qwest Center and other venues. Click here for more information.
