Those looking to clean out their medicine cabinet or properly dispose of old medications with outdated labels got that opportunity Saturday.

From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 78th and Dodge, Operation Medicine Cabinet allowed for the safe disposal of old medications. The nationwide program is designed to prevent seniors from accidentally using expired medications and prevent the possible theft of medications from their homes.

“Most people tend to either throw them down the sink or in the toilet and the problem with that is we're finding traces of prescription medications in the water supply and in fish and other types of water animals,” says Trisha Groth of Home Instead Senior Care.

Disposal of the drugs was overseen by the Douglas County Sheriff's Department. Nearly 300 pounds of meds were collected.

Home Instead Senior Care plans on having similar days at least once a year.

What a great idea mTm! Expired meds definately! I wish there was a way to recycle the unexpired meds that I have stacked up on the off chance someone else in the house will get the same prescription before the meds expire. I wish there was a legal way to reissue those to people who can't afford their meds.

I think pharmacies should have a drop off box at their locations. That's the least they can do to help. I cringe when i think of the medicines being recycled through the water.
