Work-At-Home Offer Scams Woman

The rising price of gas alone has forced many people to look for a second job. A part-time, work-at-home opportunity might sound like a good idea, but an Omaha woman found it to be a costly endeavor.

“The way the economy has been, you know, just bring in some extra income. Joanne thought she could earn $225 a day.

"Switch from a regular job that hardly pays the bills to working at home the easy way," said the ad.

A career woman, Joanne didn't want to be identified because she fell for a suspected work-at-home scheme. “You just feel like you've been taken and I don't like people who aren't honest.”

The part-time job involved processing rebates for large companies. “Normally, I would not fall into something like this, but it all looked so legit."

Before getting paid, Joanne had to pay a $200 fee. “And when I saw what was charged to my card, I said I'm going to cancel."

Suspicious, she asked for a promised refund four months ago, but has received only excuses. The Better Business Bureau has heard of this rebate job that you have to pay to get, so how does the BBB rate this employment opportunity? An "F" because the company has collected nearly 300 complaints from across the country.

“It's really not an employment opportunity,” says the BBB’s Jim Hegarty. “It's simply tips on how they might be able to make money online, so there's no real job here.”

The video sales pitch talks about rising gas prices as a good reason to buy in on the work-at-home offer. "You don't have to commute, which today saves you a lot on outrageous gas prices."

Instead of earning extra gas money, Joanne paid a fee that could have filled her tank a few times while she looked for a legitimate, part-time job. “It does embarrass me and I just want my money back."

The Better Business Bureau says it's a red flag to pay a fee to get a part-time job, especially one listed over the Internet. Also beware, as in this case, that the work-at-home schemes may operate under several different company names.

Six On Your Side has not received a response from this work-at-home offer.
