More than two weeks after the June 27th storm, west Omaha got the attention of tree debris removal crews on Monday.

The majority of debris removed by the city from public right-of-ways had until now come from inside the borders of the interstate and the Missouri River.

Crews were in Elkhorn around 214th and Blondo in the morning. "Our shaded deck is now full of sun,” says Joan Jansen. "We lost about four trees."

Jansen took notice when she saw an Omaha Public Works crew clearing tree debris. She understood that for a community that had more than 100,000 people without power two weeks ago, the cleanup would take awhile. "It wasn't too late because it took a lot of time just to cut up the trees."

For the first time, crews were out west of 156th Street. They believe they can have this area of Elkhorn cleaned out in three days, then work their way towards the interstate.

Many homeowners have been taking the debris they can handle to Ta-Ha-Zouka Park, but it gets busy on weekends, the labor is hard and gas used is expensive. "It takes a lot of time to sit in line at the park to unload a truck,” says Jansen. “You sit in line for an hour to unload for five minutes and then come back and do it again."

An indication that progress has been made is three of the debris drop-off sites will close this week. Ta-Ha-Zouka Park (208th and Elkhorn Drive), 135th & Potwin (old Millard Lumber site) and 22nd and Washington will close at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The Tranquility Park and 11th and Locust sites will remain open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. through at least July 20th, and could remain open longer depending on usage.

There is finally a woodchipper in Hillsborough Park. I wish I had gotten a picture of the tree debris, right next to the NO DUMPING sign. It's going to take them a long time to chip up the trees...and I cant wait for it to be done. The trees have been there two or three weeks, fermenting and probably molding. My allergies are at their worst right now because of all the crud in the trees that's blowing around now after being chipped. I cant wait for them to get it all hauled away. (I actually cant wait till winter...no allergies then) The homeowners should never have dumped their trees (and other junk) in the park. Tranquility is only 2 miles down the road. I wonder how many other people in the area are having breathing difficulties because of the massive concentration of allergens that are in that pile of dead trees?

I have done my part by cutting my own limbs and helping a neighbor. Everytime a storm hits I help out my neighbors. After all, it is my tree laying in their yard. I am thankful for the city to come and clean up. It may be along road ahead for some, but you have to remember, that storm was no ordinary storm! Have patience. Good things come to those who wait.

Sue, Come together, are you kidding, nearly every house has a pile of trees laying in their yard after a week and a half. Everyone is waiting for the city! Nobody is taking the matter in their own hands like responsible home owners and removing the piles to the 3 or 4 spots the city opened up for disposing this stuff the day after the storm. Yes, it was great the day or two after the storm cutting up the trees. Everybody helping out everyone. This is where it ended. Even if half of the homes are retired (which they are not) the other half should have been able to remove their own debris instead of waiting for others to do it. Deadbeats!!! Speaking of whining and complaining Next storm that happens and the city doesn't act to bale people out. What a mess that will be. Home owners will probably try to wait the city out.

IT NEVER FAILS.....someone in West O complains when the city is trying to do them a favor by hauling off their debris. GET OVER IT ! ! ! ! ! I'm sooooo sick & tired of people who complain about the city when they're actually getting a service done for them ! ! ! ! !

Dan, you sound like such a charming man. I am sure that if somebody needs help you would be most approachable. I find it interesting that most people in Omaha have come together and worked to help others but a few have taken it as an opportunity to whine and complain about everybody else.

People who are still waiting for the city to remove trees are losers. Haul them yourself its been 2 weeks. Your grass under the pile is dead because you are waiting around for someone else to get rid of your problem. You are probably the same people that complained about Hurricane victims in New Orleans wanting the govt. to help them. Its your home your problem. The same people will be mad when the city is over budget. If your old and can't afford it ask for help! There is plenty of volunteers out there including myself.

I wouldnt say that they dumped it there illegally. Moreso they did the city a favor by making it easier because everything is in one central location. It will save the city some gas from having to drive entirely through the negihborhood and stopping at basically every house, after all this is one of the hardest hit areas of the storm from the damage I survey

Tell the people hauling off the trees to come to 138th St between Maple and Fort (Hillsborough Park) and take the tree debris that almost everyone in Hillsborough illegally dumped in the park's parking lot and park grounds!!
