PayPal has announced a major expansion -- a new building and 600 more employees. It's news the city of La Vista hopes helps defray a recent loss of sales tax revenue.
With Wal-Mart moving south to Papillion and taking its tax revenue with it, the expansion at PayPal's 126th and Giles location is good news for La Vista's chamber of commerce.
"PayPal was one of our first major businesses, and now other businesses are following," said Tina Foehlinger of La Vista Chamber of Commerce. "So PayPal has kind of set the standard for La Vista and we're very excited to have them."
PayPal is a division of eBay which enables customers to send and receive payments securely online.
The La Vista operation began three years ago with 500 employees -- a number that has since doubled.
"We took a survey of where folks live and where they're commuting from and this is a nice location for that," said Ryan Downs, vice president of Paypal's World Wide Operations. "It's also a location with tremendous Interstate access. It's easy to find and, finally, there's enough land here where we can accommodate our future plans as well."
Outdoor outfitter Cabela's is one of the other major businesses building not far from the PayPal campus.
The sporting equipment retailer is expected to make up for the sales tax La Vista will lose with the Wal-Mart move.
"Cabela's is going to help us with sales tax and they are a huge destination store. And people come for miles for Cabela's and that will have a huge impact on La Vista," Foehlinger said.
Foehlinger said other companies are interested in filling Wal-Mart's vacancy.
The South Port development, consisting of hotels and a convention center, will also soon be neighbor to PayPal.
