A 32-year-old woman and her 23-year-old boyfriend were cited with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse in addition to animal abuse Monday.
Police were called to Tabitha Wood's home for allegedly abusing animals when they found much more.
Two children were put into foster care. Another child also lived in the home. He was at school at the time investigators arrived and it was not immediately known if that child was put in foster care.
Animal control officers obtained a search warrant for Wood and her boyfriend Clinton Ruppert's home at 63rd and Ruggles after a tip someone might be abusing animals there.
"This rates up there as one of the worse we have ever seen," said Mark Langan of the Nebraska Humane Society.
Investigators took pictures of a bedroom full of trash, animal waste on the floor and children living in poor conditions.
"Hard to walk through the house without stepping on feces or urine-stained carpets," Langan said.
Omaha police removed a two-month old and turned the infant over to protective custody.
"The courts will become involved with parents to see if the place is cleaned up," said Langan. "Get them parenting skills classes so they can learn to be better parents."
The Humane Society took in eight cats and three dogs. At least a few of the dogs appeared to suffer from mange.
The city condemned the house.
