Old job applications with Social Security numbers on them were found in an Omaha dumpster. The discovery came as quite a surprise to one woman.

Eight years after applying for a waitress job, Erin Pesek's job application was found in a construction dumpster near 168th and West Center Road.

“It's very irresponsible for whoever the business owner is. Why would you throw away someone's personal information? This is detrimental to my future, it could be."

About 25 job applications from 2000 were pulled from the dumpster by construction worker Matt Schoville. “It definitely should have been shredded, especially when you can buy a shredder for $15 and save everybody a lifetime of agony."

The applications carry every applicants’ Social Security number along with phone numbers, addresses and references. “There are stalkers out there that could have found this and the females, it tells everything about them," says Schoville.

“I really appreciate whoever found this,” says Pesek. “That's great and I'm glad there are people out there that care about some people and their identity."

It's suspected the applications came from the nearby Parliament Pub. The owner had several establishments in the metro. He regrets throwing out the old records in a waterlogged box without checking the contents more closely.

Also found in the dumpster was an unshredded bank statement for a small business with account numbers and how much was in the account.

Bar owner Mike Miller tells Six On Your Side that "it's a big mistake, I apologize. It won't happen again," adding, “I'll definitely invest in a shredder.”

"I'll burn it in our bonfire," says Pesek.

Since the job applications are eight years old, it's difficult to contact applicants who've changed phone numbers so Six On Your Side shredded the applications and returned the bank statements to the business.

Regardless of whether or not people are dumpster diving, etc, business owners both past and present, should not dump things without first checking the contents. Identity theft is serious business, and since there are dumpster divers out there as well as identity thieves, people need to be aware and take proper precautions when discarding sensitive documents.

Exactly. You should not have to provide a SSN for a job such as waiting tables, etc, until you GET the job and then they need it for tax purposes. Some jobs do require a fairly detailed background check, though, and they do ask for a SSN...however, these are not companies or entities who would then dump 8 years of records in a trash dumpster.

Ok here is my question..regardless of what information was found. Why are they pointing fingers at the Parliament Pub? If the job applications are eight years old, how could they be from the Parliament Pub when it has not even been open 6 months?!?

If the application asks for a SS#, don't write it in. Put a note stating the number will be provided upon request. Employers don't need the SS# unless they hire someone and that's only for the I9 and W4.

Yea I am sure every dumpster divers intention is to call six on your side. so stupid. These construction workers probably saw the papers when they were trashing something and thought hey something isn't right here.

Why would you put a social security number on just a job app in the first place? People need to be more careful with the info they put out there.

I'm an employee out at Shadow Lake Towne Center in Papillion. I noticed the other day that they are accepting applications for the new Taco Bell they are putting in. Their way of accepting applications is to have people put them in a mailbox near the building site. There is no way I would put all of my personal information on a job location and leave it in a mailbox for anyone to access! How dumb can you be?

This is a lack of good business practices which show a lack of concern for their employees!

Post your SSN here then. Yeah, that's what I thought...

no kidding. I bet you could find tons of stuff if you spent the time dumpster diving. Its not like ss numbers are hard to come by

Here's my question: Who keeps digging through dumpsters and trash cans hoping they'll find social security numbers that they can call Channel Six to tattle on?
