Omaha Police are investigating the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Franklin Taylor Jr. He was shot to death early Friday morning in front of 2564 Crown Point Avenue.

Authorities received the report of the shooting at 4:16 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found the victim on the sidewalk. He was dead at the scene.

We spoke with a man who lives in the area. He doesn't want to be identified but he heard the shots and he told us, "Almost 4:15 this morning I heard three shots. We thought it was fireworks. Then behind those three shots there were three more shoots that sounded off in the distance and I came to the porch and saw him lying down there."

Michael Browder also lives in the area and heard the shots fired.

He says, "My wife told me she heard two loud noises and she thought they were fireworks and she heard some squealing tires. That's about it."

Browder says he worries about his changing neighborhood but he insists it's not as bad as its been portrayed.

"People sometimes get the misconception that is just shoot-em-up gangster down here in the inner city on 24th. It's not. I walk my dog in Miller Park four or five times a day, sometimes as late as 10:30. It's dark and no one bothers me or anything."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 444-5656.

in regards to 'reality check' - first of all YOU"RE WRONG - he was NOT the candyman - the children loved him because he grew up and lived in the area - he was well known as a GOOD GUY~had turned his life over to the Lord - was trying to straighten it all out - the girl he was due to marry had 6 children and they ALL loved him as well as his two children- do you assume just because someone has got caught up in something - that they are a "BAD" guy - that's just ignorance~! Are YOU blameless?!?! I've known this young man since he was seven and he was the kindest - thoughtful - always looking out for family - stand up guy. So before you 'judge' know the whole story. As soon as someone sees a person has a criminal history which of course the news makes a point of - they asssume the worst. Take a look at yourself in the mirror!

A person has died so to the people who dont have nothing better to do than say smart stuff take a second and think it was a LIFE that was lost and be considerate.

It says something that the man does not want to be identified. Neighbors speak up against these thugs. You have a voice. Speak out against all of these terrible people and your neighborhood would rise. In my neighborhood I would easily identify myself.

Just so everyone knows he was a wonderful father to his 2 children that are now fatherless because some coward out in the streets decided to take him away from them. I hope he rots under the jail!

"These People" as you call us are somebodys sons, brothers, fathers, uncles,Husbands, friends and loved ones. We were ALL made in the image of GOD so for you to say those people, you are including yourself not excluding yourself. People need to be more careful of what they say cause you never know when it will be you that people might be saying "Those people" about.

being out at 4:15 and getting shot DOES mean he was out thugging around, cuz if he was just peacefully going to work he would have gotten there. Most people shot were in some sort of confrentation some way or another.

Just because someone is out at 4:15 does not mean he was a bad person. My husband is up at 3:30 and leaves for work at 4. I used to come home from work at 430 a.m. People are making implications just because of his color and the neighborhood. Not everyone that lives in North O is bad. Get more info before you pass judgement!!

I hope they find the person that did this! He didn't deserve to die this way! He was a good person.

You want a suggestion? It starts with this...GOOD parenting. Not laying around feeling soory for yourself because you feel "society" has let you down, and passing that attitude on to your kids. GOOD parenting.

r.i.p. young brother...GOD bless your soul

4:15 AM... hmm, must have been up to no good? Oh, hey, wait a minute, some people work late night or early morning shifts! It's not unusual for my husband to get home at 4 or 4:30 in the morning from work, and lots of people have to leave for work that early (firefighters, hospital workers, grocery store employees, etc.). So, Anonymous, don't be so sure he was just out hanging around doing something illegal. Maybe he was, but then again maybe he wasn't - unless you knew him personally, don't jump to conclusions.

Another news website noted that the victim was currently facing charges of possession with intent to deliver crack cocaine. So that gives me an indication of what he was doing out at that time of night, and why he was shot. It also mentioned that he was popular with all of the neighborhood kids. Most "candyman" are popular with the kids.

Another night and another shooting....thats life in Omaha baby. It sucks.

Posted by: jj on Jul 5, 2008 at 06:56 AM
anonymous, you really dont believe the things you say do you? This "victim" was probably on his way to chrch, or to help at a shelter.... ya right

    Another night

Posted by: V on Jul 4, 2008 at 10:21 PM
Just because he was out at 4:15 am doesn't mean he deserved to be killed. Have some respect.

Posted by: anonymous on Jul 4, 2008 at 09:04 PM
It is the very ignorance with the comment "These people", that creates prejudicial barriers amongst the races. Maybe at 4:15am it was one of you that caused this mans death. Stop judging and start coming up with suggestions to solve the issues of violence everywhere.

Posted by: Terry on Jul 4, 2008 at 08:46 PM
To annonymous, maybe he was leaving for work. Not eveyone who is out at 4"15 a.m. are bad. I use to have to be to work by 5 a.m.

to Anonymous he had a job if u listen to the report u should be able to go out side anytime of the day or night just because people are cowards shoot for no reason it's not is fault he did not pull the trigger remember that my god rest his soul

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 4, 2008 at 05:05 PM
Wonder what this "victim" was doing at 4:15 am...probably not his paper route. These people need to get jobs.

Posted by: Frank on Jul 4, 2008 at 12:35 PM
People need to stop killing others you aren't a real man with a gun if your purpose is to kill.
