It's never easy saying goodbye. A woman with a terminal illness is saying goodbye to her best friends who have been at her side through it all.

Sissy and Bubba have been constant and comforting passengers as 53-year-old Mary Bower travels life's roughest road. “I'm in the last stage of congestive heart failure." Unable to work and forced to sell her house, Mary has found a loving home for her companions. “Let's go find the toys. There you go. Good job."

Sissy and Bubba will now live at Hooves & Paws Animal Rescue near Glenwood, Iowa.

Caring for rescued dogs and horses costs $75,000 a year, paid through donations and owner Genea Stoops' pocket. Many are eventually adopted, but Sissy and Bubba will stay at the shelter where Mary can always find them.

“These guys will be forever residents and we want to make it so that when Mary is ready go, these dogs will visit her," says Stoops. "We'll take the dogs to Mary."

Though love for her dogs is strong, Mary knows her heart is failing. “This is the beginning of a whole new adventure for you.” And while she still has the strength, this is the best time for her to say goodbye. “You see me in your dreams, okay?”

Hooves & Paws has found homes for 75 horses and large dogs, but in these tough economic times, more pet owners cannot afford to care for large animals, so they call the shelter for help.

Cheryl has issues! The lady is selling her things... ever think she has MAJOR medical bills she doesn't want to leave behind for family? Or MAYBE she just wants to sell it all so she can have a special vacation to visit family... fly them to see her??? The narrow-mindedness I've seen here in Omaha is just sickening. A quick buck???... get a life lady!

TO CHERYL: Omaha; HOW CAN one "promote" a story like this? Maybe a plug for Hooves & Paws? There's no such thing as a "quick buck", & maybe she is just trying to get rid of things, so her FAMILY won't have to?

This woman is selling all her things on craigslist. Kind of sad. Maybe she should be spending her last days with her family and not taking up all her time trying to make a quick buck by promoting her story.

Just want to thank Mike McKnight & Channel 6 News for the opportunity to share this difficult time with me & my best friends. The comments here have been very uplifting to me in this time of sadness. I thank everyone for their prayers & well wishes. * An extra special Thank You to Genea & Bill & their Glenwood Hooves & Paws Rescue for their unending generosity & kindness. They have opened their hearts, lives & home to me, as a peaceful port in these stormy days. May God Bless & keep them safe always, as they are absolutely Angels of mercy to all animals & the most loving people I have ever met!* Now that I, too, begin another 'journey'~ I pray that my Father will watch over not only MY property in Nebraska, but also take care of the Rescue property in Iowa, as last nights storms hit us BOTH very hard, & tonight's "Round 2" storms will maybe spare us any further damage. Prayers will surely help & are greatly appreciated. Thank you again!

My husband & I want everyone to know we have become very close to Mary and she is a wonderful lady. This was a very hard thing for her to do giving up her (2) dogs. She has told us she can move forward now and take the next step in her journey to see her maker. We will be here for Mary until her journey is over. I, too, know these dogs. Every moment since the second those dogs were given to her- Mary loved them as much as LIFE itself! They were her world! The unselfish, painful, responsible, loving surrendering of these dogs cannot be questioned. It took a lot of courage. Bubba & Sissy understand & know that Mary will be waiting for each of them at the Rainbow Bridge.

This just breaks my heart. My only family is my dog, and I could never leave him. Fortunately, it's easier for dogs to forget than it is for humans. And to be in Mary's shoes would send me over the edge... dying and losing my family. God bless her.

such a bittersweet story...Mary will be in my prayers. and to michelle... it sounds like you are accusing her of "stealing" the dogs. if she did that, then please enlighten the public on why she would advertise it all over the news? do you have a personal vendetta against this woman or something? not jumping to conclusions or anything but you posted the only negative comment on here. seems like it might just be out of spite and if you just want to be nasty, take it elsewhere please!!!!

As a dog owner, I know how sad it is to give up a dog. When I first moved to bellevue I had to leave my stormie behind. I know she is in good hands because she is with my mom and not a complete stranger who would abuse her. So all my prayers go out to sissy and bubba and mary, best of luck mary

I am sure Mary is comforted by the fact that her animals will be well taken care of and that she can still visit them. Sad but heartwarming story.

It must be heart wrenching for her to do this...I can understand the emotions she is going thru...My wife and I hope for nothing but the best for Ms. Bower and the dogs.

I have seen these dogs and know this woman does not own these dogs. They were taken from a friend of mine who has been trying to find them and get them back. I do hope you do another follow up, but with the real owner this time who is trying to get them back. I understand life can be tough, but taking someone else's dogs and playing on the communities heart strings is not the solution!!

It is sad that she has to give up her dogs.I hope there is family around to help or someone she knows to care for her.

This was the saddest story i have seen in quite some time. i do hope that she has some great friends and family with her during this time. as sherry says, she should not be going through this alone.

God bless you Mary!! Sissy and Bubba are in good hands. They will forever be your best friends. By putting them in a better situation, you have given them the best gift. May God ease your heart from the sadness.

I hope you do another story on Mary Bower and let everyone know how she is doing and how maybe the public could help her find a place to live. Such a sad, sad story!!!

Does Mary Bower have family or anyone she can turn to for her personal care? I will be praying for her and would love to send money or offer help she may need. Maybe help getting to the doctor or just getting around? We don't have much but she shouldn't go through this alone and it sounds like she is.
