A 100-year-old Omaha woman who pre-purchased a funeral package has learned a $1,000 check was deposited somewhere other than in her escrow account. No one seems to know where the money went.

Ethel Bridges is going to be 101 on July 7th so she has some insight into living a long life. “Be good and kind to everyone.”

Words a former mortuary owner should hear after allegedly shorting Ethel's pre-paid funeral account. Ethel’s son Tom Bridges discovered Rozanek Chapel closed two years ago. “I had no idea that they would be going under.”

Another funeral director took over Rozanek’s pre-paid accounts and reported no documentation of the $1,000 paid by Ethel that should have been added to her escrow. He tells Six On Your Side the out of business mortuary had poor accounting of pre-need plans.

These pre-need funeral agreements are lengthy. There are many checks and balances built in, so when it's time to rest in peace the family can be left with peace of mind the arrangements have been paid for.

The new president of the Nebraska Funeral Directors Association says 85 percent of the money for a pre-paid funeral must go into bank CDs or escrow with yearly reports to the state.

“They can trust their funeral director, but they do need to ask some of those questions,” says funeral director Jon Reichmuth. “Where is my money going? How is it protected and what will I receive when that time comes?”

Tom says his mom's pre-paid funeral account stands at about $3,200 which is short of what she may need when the time comes. “I wouldn't probably even tell her about it ‘cause I didn't want to get her upset."

The Nebraska Insurance Department is still investigating what happened to Ethel’s payment, but with a 101st birthday two months away, her mind's not on a funeral, but a party. "Just waiting for somebody to invite me."

Our Six On Your Side investigation has led to the promise of restitution.

The former owner of the mortuary that failed called Ethel's son. R.A. Rozanek told her son that the pre-paid funeral package will be made whole within a week. Rozanek did not return our phone calls asking for an explanation.
