Grandmother: "She was a good girl"

No one knows why Shannon Elizabeth Steinbach did the unthinkable. Police in Schleswig, Iowa say the mother of two killed her infant child and then killed herself.

We talked to Shannon's grandmother, Cleone O'Neill, and the 86-year-old had a simple message: her granddaughter was a good person and a good mother.

Shannon's youngest child, Hope, was little more than a handful at birth, born premature, but loved from the first moment -- love that helped her grow and until she was ready to go home.

Grandmother says the baby's mother, Shannon, was a good mom.

Cleone says, "She was a good girl. I helped raise her. I took care of her some when she was growing up. She was a quiet little girl; very sensitive. That's the way she was raised -- to love people and care for people."

But something happened. Somewhere along the line, Shannon stepped outside of herself. No one is sure what happened but the possibility of postpartum depression has surfaced.

Dr. Sonja Kinney is with the Nebraska Medical Center and she spoke in general terms about postpartum depression.

She said it can involve, "a lot of people second guessing themselves; putting a lot of pressure on themselves; needing to be the perfect mom; the perfect wife; having the perfect baby.

"The most extreme postpartum depression is people who have postpartum psychosis. They may have different messages coming in, telling them some things are happening and they need to do something to themselves or the baby."

On May 19, the Crawford County, Iowa sheriff's department responded to a 911 call in Schleswig. Authorities found the bodies of Shannon and Hope.

The case has tentatively been ruled a murder-suicide. Authorities say it appears that Shannon hanged herself in the basement of the family home. Four-month-old Hope was found in an upstairs bathtub in approximately five to six inches of water.

Unfortunatley, this is far more common than anyone cares to think. Please go to www.jennyslight.org for more information. By increasing awareness, we can save lives.

Hope was a miracle baby...the chances of her surviving in the beginning were not good...she showed us so much! the most important thing she showed us was that miracles can and do happen in the 21st century. Folks, God is still ALIVE and among us...

this is the saddest thing i have ever heard. i have a 14 week old daughter and this makes my heart just ache. i can understand postpartum depression could have been the problem, but this is just so sad that the little one had put up such a fight in the beginning of her life for it all to just end so soon. god bless the family.

Thank you, Cleone, for sharing your story. I'm sure Shannon was a beautiful woman and will be terribly missed. I pray your family finds peace in the midst of this tragedy. God bless you.

To Chris Bellevue, mental illness such as post partum can happen in seconds and last couple weeks enough to do damage such as this. May God be with the remaining family and guide Shannon and Hope to the gates of Heaven.

Postpartum Psychosis is NOT a form of postpartum depression. It is an entirely different syndrome. It comes on quickly, involves delusions, hallucinations, and is an urgent medical emergency. It is also extremely rare. It is indeed tragic that both Shannon and Hope lost their lives. My heart goes out to their families.

I pray that they both have found peace and a have moved on to a better place. The family needs to have faith and get through this tough time. Time, love and forgiveness heals all wounds.

It's very sad, and a reminder that explaining away mental health issues frivolously only leads to more people being put in harms way. While I've heard a lot of horrible stories, nothing sadder comes to mind right now.
