A traffic accident on Interstate 80 near Gretna snarled traffic Thursday morning. A Corvette collided with a truck. The driver of the Corvette was injured but will recover.

The crash happened shortly after 5 a.m.

Authorities say the Corvette was eastbound and the driver crossed the median, crashing nearly head-on into a small moving van.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital but her injuries were not considered to be serious. She had a baby in the car but the baby did not appear to have suffered any injuries. The child was taken to the hospital for a check-up.

The driver of the truck was not hurt.

Westbound traffic was reduced to one lane.

TY to Joe the wrecking yard worker who saw and knows 1st. hand the airbags deployed! Ppl can mangle the truth more twisted then sheared metal. Everyone knows no child belongs in a car with no backseat. Hopefully this state trooper's report is one of public record because no officer would commend someone for having a baby in a front seat no matter what quality the carseat. Even car seat manufacturor's warn against it! An infant traveling from another state in a corvette is sheer insanity! God deserves the glory for the child & mother's life. The car seat maker deserves kudo's & as for the car withstanding the near head on impact of a driver crossing the median strip applause to GM as well. But for God sake pray for the safety of this child. A perilous car a dangerous airbag and a parent willing to travel hundreds of miles from CO. with an infant riding shotgun are simply too many multiple errors in judgement to claim a mere accident. It was a tragedy waiting to happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ryan states: Also the airbag was disabled -THAT IS A LIE I WORK at the wrecking yard. Seen the car this morning, The air bag DID deploy. I witnessed it with my own 2 eyes, I do not know this lady but her plates are from Colorado Why would she be traveling at 5 AM with a newborn IN the front seat of a Vett? So RYAN STOP LYING she DID NOT DISABLE the airbag. Come down here and LOOK at the car, and stop trying to make the mother look good. Or is that what she told you? Come take a look for yourself.

How about some facts for all you people who are "guessing". I know the driver and have spent the past two days in the hospital with her. If the Corvette is so "unsafe" how did the baby walk away without a scratch? The car held up exactly like it should. The baby was properly secured and the fact that she had no injuries is proof of that. The state trooper actually praised the mother for securing her daughter so well. Also the airbag was disabled. This model of Corvette didn't have the switch to turn it off, so the owner researched and found how to disable the airbag so the child could and did ride safely. How many of us growing up rode in the back of a truck or sat in a seat with only a lap belt? Please keep comments positive and not bash a woman who has been through so much this weekend.

Glad the baby is okay. Hope the driver is okay, too. Very glad the truck driver was unhurt. The Vette driver got VERY lucky this time that the baby is okay. A baby shouldn't be in the front seat of any vehicle. Perhaps the insurance $ can go toward a more family sensible vehicle and a new Vette can come later.

FYI: Only much newer cars with airbags give you the option of turning them off with the flip of a switch. The Corvette in the picture looked like a much older model. You can also say you could simply remove the passenger side airbag but good luck finding someone to do it, as it is against the law. PS: I'm not a parent but a former GM employee so I know the safety risks of kids in the front seat.

Fwiw, I know the driver of the Vette, and she would never do anything to put her baby, herself, or others in harms way. The baby is doing great, but the driver is pretty banged up, but she is doing fine. The Vette held up like a champ and did just what you'd expect from GM's flagship sports car, it protected the occupants while sacrificing itself. If you're going to get into a collision, I dont know of many vehicles (other than a Volvo) Id rather be in than my Vette, they hold up real well.

to anonymous it's called geting a new car. Trade in your sports car and get a car that is more family friendly. I'm sorry but it's common sense people. You should never have a carseat in the front of a car. If you can afford to get a corvette she should be able to afford to get a family car.

To Anonymous: You buy a car with a backseat. You can find lots of cars that have backseats that are amazingly enough cheaper than a Corvette. It's not rocket science! Check your ego and put the safety of your child first.

Well people without backseats should be aware of the risks of serious injury or even death to children placed in front seats.

Posted by: John Location: Omaha on May 23, 2008 at 07:11 AM
Every car without a backseat can have the airbags shut off if they have them. llr let us know when your parent of the year award comes out.

    llr... my thoughts exactly

Posted by: Anonymous on May 22, 2008 at 12:27 PM
llr, so how are people who don't have cars with backseats suppose to get their children around?

Posted by: llr Location: omaha on May 22, 2008 at 08:42 AM
Corvettes do not have backseats. You shouldn't have a baby in the front seat of ANY car, even in a carseat. Glad to hear everyone's ok though...sounded like this could have been a life-ending crash.
